38. Talking about Computers: Story

There is a guy named (1) Mac. Mac has a computer with a keyboard screen and monitor. Mac has a problem with his computer. It sings badly. (2)

Every time (3) Mac touches (4) the power button or uses the mouse, the computer starts (5) singing. It’s a bad singer. (6)

Mac saves all his work on a flash drive and then takes (7) the computer to his neighborhood computer store (8) in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The computer store owner (9) is a giraffe. He checks (10) Mac’s computer but can’t fix (11) the problem.

Mac takes his computer to Silicon Valley* in northern (12) California where he meets a computer nerd (14) named Steve.

Steve takes Mac’s computer to his garage (15) and hits it (16) with a hammer. (17)

The computer stops (18) singing. Mac is thrilled (19) that his computer is fixed.

*Silicon Valley is near San Francisco Bay Area. The term, Silicon Valley, refers to all the high-tech businesses in the area. Silicon chips are used in computers.

38. Talking about Computers: Reading

Mac Apple lives in Salt Lake City. Mac is thirty-five years old. He works for a big department store near (1) the Salt Lake Temple.

Mac likes classical music and has a big collection of CDs. His favorite composer is Mozart.

Mac writes (2) music and prints it (3) for his friends. He uses a PC computer with a keyboard, screen, monitor and an inkjet printer. Mac uses his computer a lot.

Mac has a problem with his computer: it sings. (4) Every time (5) Mac touches (6) the power button or uses the mouse, the computer starts (7) singing. His computer sings jazzy songs (8)—they drive him crazy! (9)

Mac decides to get the computer fixed. He saves all his work (10) on a flash drive and takes (11) the computer to his neighborhood computer store. (12) The store owner, (13) a giraffe, examines Mac’s computer but can’t fix it. (14)

Mac takes his computer to Silicon Valley in California. There Mac meets (15) a computer  nerd named (16) Steve.

Steve likes (22) Mac’s name. (23) He decides to use it for his new (24) computer company. The icon for his computer is an apple (25) with a bite out of it. (26) He calls his new computer a “Mac”.
