16. Using Public Transit: Story

Chester is a cricket (1). He lives on 200th Street and Broadway Avenue in New York City.

He has a mouse (2) friend named Tucker who lives at Times Square on 42nd Street and 7th Avenue.

Chester decides to go downtown to visit his friend. He leaves his apartment at noon and jumps (3) on the “A” train.

Since Chester is so small (4), he doesn’t need a ticket. The fare for the subway or bus is $2.50.

Chester gets off at the Columbus Circle stop and transfers to a bus in order (5) to go east to 7th Avenue.

There are schedules for both the subway and the bus. More buses and subway trains run during rush hour. (6)

Chester misses the first (7) bus but catches (8) the next one without (9) a problem.

He gets off at the last stop before the bus turns east. (10) He arrives safely (11) at Tucker’s place.

Chester didn’t enjoy (12) the ride. But he is happy to see Tucker Mouse.

16. Using Public Transit: Reading

The Cricket in Times Square is a children's book by George Selden. Selden says, "One night I was coming home (1) on the subway, and I heard a cricket chirp (2) in Times Square."
In the Times Square subway stop in New York City, Chester Cricket meets (3) Tucker Mouse, Harry Cat and Mario. Mario is Chester’s human friend.

Chester Cricket wants to go downtown to visit Tucker. Chester lives at 200th Street and Broadway Avenue. Tucker Mouse lives in Times Square on 42nd Street and 7th Avenue.

Chester takes (4) public transit. He gets on the “A” train. Since (5) Chester is so small, (6) he doesn’t need a ticket—many small children ride free, too.

Tickets for the New York Subway and bus cost $2.50 and are interchangeable. Many New Yorkers have a pass for the subway.

Chester gets off at the Columbus Circle stop and transfers to a bus. He needs to go east and get to 7th Avenue.

Of course there are more buses and subway trains during rush hour. (7) Chester tries to avoid (8) rush hour because he’s so small someone might step on him (9).

Chester misses the first (10) bus because he was buying a hot dog. He catches (11) the next one without (12) a problem.

He gets off at the last stop before the bus turns east to cross over the river (13). Chester didn’t enjoy (14) the ride.

Nevertheless, (15) he is happy to see Tucker Mouse and be in Times Square again (16). There are lots of things to see and do in Times Square!

Together (17) they start looking for their friend Harry Cat and see what he’s been up to! (18) They have many exciting adventures. (19) You should read (20) the book!
