9. At the Supermarket: Story
There is a little fox (1) whose name is Doxy. Her family needs groceries so (2) Doxy goes to the grocery store.

At the store, Doxy gets a shopping cart. She goes down each aisle looking for (3) what she wants to buy.

She gets some hamburger (4) at the meat department. Then she goes to the bakery and buys bread and doughnuts.

In the produce department she buys some vegetables—carrots and lettuce (5). She also picks up (6) some fruit—bananas and apples (7).

Doxy wants some milk but can’t find it. (8) She asks a clerk (9), “Can you (10) show me where the milk is?”

The clerk says, “Yes, follow me.” Doxy follows him and he shows her the milk. She puts a gallon of (11) milk in her shopping cart.

9. At the Supermarket: Reading

Doxy is a little fox (1) who lives with her mother and father in Indianapolis, Indiana. Indianapolis is the capital of the state of Indiana and has a population of 829,718.

Today (2) Doxy’s family wants her to shop (3) for groceries. Doxy goes to the grocery store. She likes (4) grocery shopping.

Doxy gets a shopping cart. She enters the store and says hello to some of her neighbors. (5) She goes down each (6) aisle to find what (7) she wants to buy.

She goes to the meat department and buys some hamburger. Next (8) she goes to the bakery. Here she picks up (9) some bread and a dozen doughnuts.

In the produce department she buys some fruit and vegetables. Doxy talks with (10) Fred Johnson. He and his neighbor Georgia are Doxy’s good friends.

Doxy picks up two gallons of whole milk (14) and puts it (15) in her shopping cart.

The bill is too much. (18) Doxy asks to see the price of each item. (19) She discovers the apples (20) are organic and from New Zealand. They are very expensive (21).

Roxy decides she doesn’t want them after all (22) and asks the clerk to take them off (23) her bill. Now the charge (24) is only $4.52. Doxy is happy. She pays for the groceries and goes home.

Sam lives in Brooklyn, New York. His brother Henry lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Henry wants Sam to send him his stamp album.

Andy is a seal. He goes to school at Reagan Elementary in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison is the capital of the state of Wisconsin. Andy likes his school.

Andy is seven years old. His favorite thing (1) is to play ball with his friends. Today while he’s playing, (2) he feels his back and shoulder hurting. (3)

There is an elephant named Richard. It’s his birthday. (1) He needs clothes so he goes (2) to K-Mart.
