36. Opening a Checking Account: Story
Ruth is a penguin. She lives in Columbus, Ohio. She just
received (1) a big check from the North American Penguin Society. She
decides to cash it. (2)
In the bank, Ruth needs to open an account. That’s okay; she’s
always wanted (3) to have her own (4) checking account and a debit
card.
The bank teller asks her for her (5) documents. Ruth shows
him (6) her driver’s license. (7)
Ruth deposits most (8) of her check in her new checking and
savings accounts. She takes a few (9) dollars cash.
Ruth’s very pleased (10) to have her own debit card. Now
she will be able to (11) withdraw money when she needs it by using an
ATM, her new card, and her PIN.
The only thing that worries her (12) is that she
will run out (13) of money before she gets (14) another $700,000
check from NAPS next week. (15)

Opening a Checking Account: Reading
There is a girl named
Susan who lives in Hawaii. She wants a rabbit. (1)
The rabbit she wants
is very expensive. (2) It costs $2000. It is a special rabbit with long
hair and floppy ears. (3) It’s an Angora rabbit.
Susan goes to her bank
in Honolulu to withdraw money from her account. She tries (4) to
withdraw the money from the ATM but she has forgotten her PIN and her debit
card won’t work.
She goes into the bank
and talks with a bank teller. The teller gives her her (5) PIN number.
Susan still has trouble. (6)
She goes back (7)
to the teller. He explains that her balance in her savings account has
fallen below (8) $2000. She doesn’t have enough (9) money.
Susan remembers
(10) that her aunt in Paris has lots of money. She flies (11) to France
to ask her (12) for some money.
Susan’s aunt goes with
her to the bank. Susan shows the bank people (13) all her documents.
Susan’s aunt writes
(14) a check for $2000 and deposits it in a checking account for Susan. Susan
is very happy because now she can buy (15) the rabbit she wants.
Susan’s aunt takes
her to visit (16) the Eiffel Tower in Paris. They climb (17) to the top
so they can see the whole city. (18)
When they get to the
top of the tower, Susan finds (19) a rabbit with long hair and floppy
ears. It’s an Angora rabbit!
She takes this (20)
rabbit to her home (21) in Honolulu. Susan buys (22) the other
rabbit. Now she has lots and lots (23) of rabbits!
